04/27/2009   IOOF 11 - Fire 1

This FIRE squad couldn't stop the fire.  The Dover Little League 2009 season began on Monday night with a rematch of the 2008 Championship teams on Gabarro field.  Defending league champion IOOF handed the FIRE fighters their first loss of the season to a tune of an 11-1, mercy rule shortened drubbing.

IOOF's Casey  Aubin and Fire's Brad Bishop locked up in a pitchers duel and a 2-1 score after two innings.  IOOF struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first before Fire took one back in the top of the third.   Dan Harriman's single to right center field was recorded as Fire's first hit of the season.  Brad Bishop followed two batters later with a shot to center which scored Harriman from second base and tightened up the contest.

IOOF took two more back in their home half of the 3rd inning for a 4 - 1 lead.  Fire had visions of comeback in the top of the 4th inning as Jake Donavan drew a one out walk.  Brother Joey Donavan then knocked the first hit of his big league career off of Aubin into right field and Fire had two ducks - er, Donavans - on the pond.  The rally would fall short, however, as IOOF was able to get out of the jam.  IOOF then put the contest out of reach with 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to complete the game.

Fire will be back at the scene on Wednesday in a 5:45 tilt against Reds Shoe Barn.
